If you have been to my blog before or follow me on Twitter, you’d probably know that I really enjoy the work of Dan Meyer and the Three Act Math Task. I am pleased to share the news that the Southwestern Ontario Association of Mathematics Educators (SWOAME) has arranged to bring Dan Meyer to work with our local math educators next Spring. He is known worldwide for his 3 Act Math Tasks that allow students to solve problems that exist in the world around us through media.
Event Description:
We threaten and we persuade. We try to add real-world context problems. In spite of our efforts, students often disengage from math still. Dan will describe research-based methods for instilling a need for new learning. Participants will learn how to make the curriculum expectations’ modelling practice accessible to students, resulting in engagement and higher achievement.
As part of their work, Dan and the participants will construct a website full of resources, including a document of “rules of the road” – easily implemented techniques for putting students in that state of intellectual need.
Event Details:
- Who: Grade 6-12 Teachers
- When: Saturday, May 17th, 8:30am – 3:30pm

Special thanks to the Greater Essex County District School Board and Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board for sponsoring this event to ensure our local Math Teachers could have the opportunity to learn more about Dan’s work.

Is it for any teachers or board employees only?
Hi Mary-Ann:
The workshop is open on a first-come, first-serve basis for anyone in education.
Hope to see you there!
Why would you want to listen to someone from a failed educational system like the US, that performs even worse than Canada?
Interesting perspective. I was considering playing with this one a bit, but I really don’t want to have anyone miss my sarcasm.
I don’t think Dan nor anyone trying to improve education believes they have the “silver bullet.” However, his perspective has really had me looking at how I teach in a new light. Whether you believe the US system has “passed” or “failed,” it would be a shame to assume that there are no American teachers who have some great knowledge to share.
For what it is worth, thanks for tossing in your opinion. I’ll assume I won’t see you and your glass half full outlook at the workshop! 🙂
Very excited about this! I’ll assume you had hand in making this happen? Good work!
It should be a great day! I really have only been helping with the promoting and getting support from our board. David Petro, Michele Cooper and other SWOAME Members did most of the hard work! 🙂
