ADE Apple Distinguished Educator Application
Kyle Pearce, Class of 2013 – Tecumseh Vista Academy K-12
The North American deadline for teachers to apply for the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) program Tuesday January 15th, 2013. With a time restriction of 2 minutes, I found creating this video very difficult as it really makes you think about what you feel is most important about your teaching style and how you integrate technology in your classroom. Due to the time restraint, I decided that I would grab a variety of video clips from my classroom and then work to trim clips and eliminate those that seemed least important. After much time and effort, here is what I came up with.
Special thanks to my colleague and friend, Shane Byrne for his help capturing video on multiple occasions.
What is the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) Program?
Each year, Apple accepts applications internationally from educators of K-12 and post-secondary institutions that outline how the educator utilizes Apple technology in the classroom. Simply put, the process consists of answering some questions and requires the applicant to submit a video. Apple’s intention is to find educators who are passionate about innovative teaching.
Application Periods Vary According to Region
Apple accepts applications from the following regions of countries at different times:
- Asia-Pacific
- Europe, India and UAE
- North America
- South America
The number of applicants that are accepted into the program can vary from year to year and from participating country to country. This year, the Apple Distinguished Educator program will be accepting a maximum of 50 educators from Canada.
The Role of the ADE
Apple Distinguished Educators fulfill four primary roles in their interaction with Apple:
- Advocates
Apple expects that their distinguished educators advocate the potential of Apple technologies and assist fellow educators and supervisory officials, when possible. As a result, ADEs commonly deliver professional development on a local, provincial, national and international level. - Advisors
At times, Apple may seek the advice of their ADEs to help programmers and designers to assist in making Apple technology as beneficial as possible in schools. - Authors
ADEs publish material to share with colleagues. Lessons, best practices, tutorials, and other content that will support others with their attempts to integrate Apple technology in their schools. - Ambassadors
ADEs are expected to empower each other and bring global experiences to classrooms everywhere.
These four primary roles are reason enough for me to apply for inclusion in the Apple Distinguished Educator program.
Wish me luck – hopefully, I’ll have good news in the coming months!
