Learn Pythagorean Theorem Through Exploration - New Free iBook on iTunes by Kyle Pearce

Last week I officially published my first interactive iBook on iTunes called Learn Pythagorean Theorem Through Exploration. This iBook is FREE to use under a creative commons license and scaffolds students from a 3 Act Math Task all the way to using Pythagorean Theorem to solve the problem.

Table of Contents

  • Chapter 1: Taco Cart [3 Act Math Task]
  • Chapter 2: Characteristics of Triangles
  • Chapter 3: Pythagorean Theorem
  • Chapter 4: Purposeful Practice

Chapter 1: Taco Cart [3 Act Math Task]

The interactive iBook begins by introducing a task by Dan Meyer called Taco Cart:

Students interact with their peers and other students around the world by tapping on widgets to enter their predictions and view the predictions of others in real-time.

Chapter 2: Characteristics of Triangles

The second chapter brings some characteristics of triangles to the forefront in order to begin leading the learning towards right angle triangles and Pythagorean Theorem.

Students will see some quick references to types of triangles, naming them by side length and angle measure, and then have an opportunity to practice their new knowledge through quiz widgets.

Chapter 3: Pythagorean Theorem

Students watch a series of visualizations representing Pythagorean Theorem by finding square-areas for each side length and moving them around to show the relationship between the two short legs and the hypotenuse.

Students can use the Sketchpad widget to discover the formula for Pythagorean Theorem and then share it out to Twitter using a hashtag for viewing directly from the iBook!

Chapter 4: Purposeful Practice

In the last chapter, we have some purposeful practice organized for students to practice their learning. All work can be done in the iBook via widgets and they can even share out their results to Twitter and other social media.
